Robert Usrey's Freestanding A/C Solution
A number of people have asked about installing an air conditioner in their vintage trailer. There are many different approaches, so we thought that we would share our take on the problem. We did not want a permanent mounted unit, as it takes too much valuable space and requires draining the condensate tray, etc, as well as it completely ruins the look of a restored canned ham with an ugly AC window unit hanging outside, We bought an LG wheeled room unit, built a window exhaust that replaces the screen, and the unit is stowed in the shower while underway. Takes 5 minutes to setup and stow away, and if we will not be needing it, we leave it at home..with no mods to the trailer!.
Galley countertop and jalousie window
To install, first remove the window screen
Cut a panel the same size as the screen. Here I have used birch which I stained to match the rest of the interior. The cut out is for the a/c exhaust vent.
The unit travels in the shower stall where it is secure and won't roll around.
This is an LG-LP0814WNR 8000 BTU
The screen is stored between refrigerator and wall when not in use. The vent panel stores here too.
Snap the exhaust panel into the window frame
Snap the exhaust vent into the cutout on the vent panel
Set the unit on the counter and clamp the outlet cover to the exhaust vent
Done!
The unit blows cold air straight out the front so the floor fan is used to direct the cold air to the front or rear of the trailer, whichever is needed. Both the unit and the fan have remote controls so you can easily adjust settings.
