Road Trip to Iowa 2017, 10/1-10/8/2017

This road trip will take us into country we've not previously been. We are heading west to Iowa to camp in one of the campgrounds made famous in author Karen Musser Nortman's Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries series. Karen says Maquoketa Caves State Park is her favorite. Her book "Bats and Bones", first in the series, is based on this campground.

Once again, we will caravan as we head west on I-80. Our first stop will be to tour the RV Museum and Hall of Fame in Elkhart, IN ($10 admission, $8 if you're a senior, and dogs permitted in strollers, carriers or if held), I expect us to arrive there at roughly 10:30 a.m. for anyone meeting up with us there. I understand some are camping in Elkhart to meet us at the museum.

From there we continue west into Illinois where we will camp at Starved Rock State Park for two nights.

Day three we will depart for a leisurely 150 mile drive to Maquoketa State Park in Maquoketa, IA. The majority of this park's facilities were created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s so beautiful rock work abounds. Lots of trails and hiking and CAVES!

Mabel suggests at some point during our stay there that we make a 60 mile drive from the campground to Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids has a very large population of Czechs and a visit to Czech Village/New Bohemia would be very interesting.

We will leave Iowa on Sunday, October 8. Anyone who wants to make again make an overnight stay at Mabel's Glade, a 350 mile journey from the campground. As before, we can provide limited electric and a single bathroom/shower.
